In the middle of my busy shift, my headnurse summoned me to discuss something important. It is the reprimand letter for the medication error we have committed in June. Being the bedside nurse who gave the Plavix to a patient despite the medicine being discontinued, I am now asked to join the medication reorientation. Although the reprimand was not the hard, the lesson I have learned from this mistake was very traumatizing. I am now going to be extra careful in giving out medications.

I got a text so early in the morning from my co-staff nurse. It’s her dad’s birthday and was asking for the chicken recipe that we had at Toastbox. It was chicken rice I told her. She also asked for a gift suggestion for her dad. I just tol her that her to buy a home brew kit gift for dad which is available at the mall.

The setup in the dorm is getting better and better. First, they have renovated the hallway lights and ceiling then the bathrooms and now the reception hall.  The building was built some 35 years ago and it is about high time to make some renovations. The reception hall was pumped up  a bit with the placement of modern sofas.  I am really getting the hang of hanging out in the uber cool dorm.

My niece in Canada will be giving birth to her first child anytime next week. Too bad I cannot make it to this very special occasion but most of our relatives in the US will be flying in to be with her. They were able to avail of the Branson vacation packages. I am really excited because technically speaking I am going to be a grandmom! For now, I have to be contented with the webcam feed.
Now more than any day, people are very conscious in spending their money. Vacation seem to be on the bottom of their lists but once in a while, people need to decompress. I for one, have been longing to get a breath of fresh air. I am thinking of flying out of the country but I want to bring along my little nieces with me. With a very limited budget on hand, I need a very good travel package deal.

This is a case of 77-year old male who was diagnosed with Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease (HCVD), Chronic Kidney Disease and Adenocarcinonam of the prostrate. He was also diagnosed earlier this year with Coronary Artery Disease – 3-vessel disease and underwent coronary artery bypass graft in June 2010. He is also hemodialysis three times a week.
He was admitted for planned pleurodesis due to diagnosed pleural effusion of about 600-700 cc of fluid on each side of the pleural space, however patient was undecided. Since then, patient has gradual development of dyspnea or difficulty breathing.
His dypnea was relieved by thoracentesis. The surgeon then suggested for bilateral thoracoscopy for the evaluation of the pleural cavity and possible biopsy of questionable and doubtful fluids and talc pudrage. The talc pudrage of the pleural cavity is the administration of a talc to promote adhesion of tissues so as to prevent accumulation of fluid. During pleuroscopy talc is insufflated through the lumen of the mediastinoscope. Up to 2 gr of purified talc is sprinkled under vision over the entire pleural surface.

The procedure was successful and the patient was discharged 2 days after the chest tubes were removed. There were no complaints about dyspnea and he can tolerate room air. He will just come back as an out-patient for his hemodialysis.

The insurance industry has hit rock bottom about five years ago as one by one, insurance companies have closed their doors on their clients. That is why it is not surprising that people are very hesitant, to say the least, in availing of insurances whether life, education or death.
Remaining dedicated companies are now taking stringent measures in making their products hard sell. They are trying to redeem their stained reputation. Reputation that they have built decades ago. They are giving free term life insurance quotes over the phone and online so as to reach every possible person. Being in the medical profession, I could say that getting an insurance is a fundamental of one’s existence.
