It is amazing how natural thing works specifically on my body. I lost about 3 kilos by just running about 6 kilometers atleast twice a week. I really wanted to take my running seriously but my erratic work sked does not allow me to do so. Also, the safest place to run around is really far from my place. I would be surprised if one day I purchased lipozene just to have a continuity in weight loss.

We had this patient since July of 2010. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She was readmitted due to fever and productive cough.
At 84 years old, she can no longer perform activities of daily living. She is positive for spastic flexion of the upper extremities and spastic extension of both lower extremities. Never spoke and opens eyes occasionally although she opens her eyes to verbal command at times. She only moans and do not communicate even in words. As such her Glasgow coma scale plays between 9 and 11. Overall, she has been stable and uneventful. Her daughter who lives with her just decided to keep her in the hospital as her daughter is always on flight as a cabin crew. The old woman is rich and has saved money in the bank that her daughter has decided to spend all her money on her hospitalization. The daughter says: it is her money anyway.
Mrs. C, a widow, has her caregiver 24/7. They are the ones performing feeding via PEG, bathing, diaper changing and basically everything. All the nurse does is to take her vital signs.
Being assigned to her the other day, I noticed that she is having skip beats. Although the beats are within normal range, I referred the matter to her attending. The cardio fellow ordered for ECG/EKG test at bedside and revealed premature atrial contractions which they suspect might be associated with electrolyte imbalance. She was then tested for serum potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium which all turned in to be normal.
The cardiologist attending then ordered for 2D echo with Doppler studies to visualize the heart’s pumping activity. It is like the ultrasound of the heart. The results are yet to come in

I can’t help but laugh out loud after reading my nieces’ status on her facebook wall. It says that she feels inspired to go on a diet when she sees sexy women in bathing suits. However, her aim to go lighter and fitter vanishes as soon as she steps out her room and see what her mom has prepared on the table. She said that she will never win the battle against food that is why she is thinking of taking adapexin-p to cut down her excess pounds.

I was surprised to learn this morning (coming back from long days off) that our patient diagnosed to have 3-vessel disease went home against medical advice. It was for the reason of lack of funds. Having that type of disease, the patient is at risk of chest pain or worse, heart attack. In times like this, I begin to think that it is the focal point of investment to get medical insurance.
There have been patients in our institution whose medical expenses were shouldered by Medicare plan. It is about time to give it a serious thought.

I got home around 9:00 am, did some online rush work and hit the bed before 10:00 am. I was feeling a bit under the weather having itchy throat and occasional cough. I was awakened around 12:00 nn by my own sneeze. It was horrible as I was having runny nose already. I reached through my purse and popped in Benadryl 25mg capsule and within an hour I dozed off. I was constantly awakened by my itchy throat and clogged nose but I was still manage to go back to sleep until 9:00 am of Sunday.
My sister was joking that they were thinking of calling an ambulance because I did not get out of my room for the past 24 hours, no food and water. I survived!
I had the pulmonologist fellow at the hospital listen to my breath sounds the other day and she told me it was clear. She took a look of my tonsils and told me that they were a little bit reddish but not swelling. She instructed me to gargle warm water with salt..

I was really cracking up when I read my nieces’ status on Facebook. She says that from small size, she has gone to medium and that she is carrying her lower abdomen for a belt bag. She is blaming it to aging. While it is true that at some point in our lives that our metabolism slows down, it is also true that growing horizontally can be prevented. ab workouts have been the ideal way to losing your love handles.

In my aim to get rid of my love handles, I am trying hard to do crunches at home whenever possible. Lately though, I am having a hard time squeezing a few glides on abrocket due to my erratic work sked. The perfect stomach fat loss that I have been aiming for the longest is yet to achieve. I need to device a plan that will work for me.

My sister got herself an Abrocket for her birthday. Its claim to fame is to tone down your core without the pressure on your neck and back. In the three days that I am trying it, I could say that it is working as I feel the force in my core.
The other day, I chanced upon a health and fitness oriented show. The host was trying to show how he achieved his six packs. I can’t believe that he mostly use pull up bar to tone his lower abdomen. I think I will be getting one to match my Abrocket time.

Lately, I am into watching Top Chef Just Desserts. Maybe because I am a sucker for great desserts. I actually can live with just desserts.
At the start of the season for this special edition, one of the chefs’ attitude is noticeable. Seth is 33 from New York. At first, you would think that he has just an attitude. He snaps at any one who he thinks is going against him. Actually, he actually thinks that everyone is against him.
There was this one time that he broke into tears as he presents his creation to the just on a quickfire challenge.
The tension between him and the entire pack brews up. The lot is having a hard time adjusting to his breakdowns and emotional bursts.
I do not know if it is some form of a gimmick, but in the recent quickfire challenge, Seth started to mumble things as he is getting anxious about not having his cups that he will, according to him, use in the challenge. He stormed off the waiting hall and next thing they know is that siren from an ambulance broke their silence. Seth, just broke down due to anxiety attack and he is out of the game.
According to http://www.panic-anxiety.com/anxiety-attacks/, anxiety attack is a sudden acute episode of intense anxiety and feelings of panic.
If anxiety is appropriate when a ‘real’ threat is present, Adrenalin is ‘used up’ effectively by either fleeing from or fighting the threat. When Adrenalin is not used up during an anxiety reaction when no real threat is present, it causes the body to experience and maintain a much higher level of symptoms which then escalates into an anxiety attack.
Signs and symptoms include:
• Breathlessness
• ‘Racing’ heart
• Shaking
• Dizziness
• Stomach symptoms
• Blurred vision
• ‘Pins and needles’ sensations in limbs
• Difficulty swallowing
• Chest pains
According to the said website, anxiety reactions are formed in the subconscious mind by a small organ called the Amygdala. This organ behaves like a thermostat, regulating the anxiety response. It is this organ, which perpetuates the anxiety response, which causes anxiety attacks. Under normal circumstances, the Amygdala only reacts when ‘real’ threats are present but when it becomes re-set at a higher-than-normal level of anxiety because of repeated anxiety during times of stress, for example, anxiety attacks, phobias and other anxiety disorder symptoms are formed.

I was the charge nurse then. I have just started on my 24-hour check on patients’ charts when the Pulmo Fellow came in to review one of her consultant’s patient’s chart. The patient is an 83-year old female who I learned has been coming in and out of the hospital due to her heart condition. This time she was admitted due to melena which is passage of black, tarry stools composed largely of blood that has been acted on by gastric juices, indicative of bleeding in the upper digestive tract (answers.com). Her test on occult blood came in positive and we have been wondering why she has not been referred to a gastroenterologist. The fellow asked me if the said patient has already referral to a said specialist to which I replied back, she might want to order for a referral. She said it is not her decision to make. A couple of days have passed and the patient still continues to pass melena and finally the attending has referred her to a gastroenterologist.
After the gut specialist has seen the patient, he ordered for an RBC tagging. What I like about being stationed at the Medical-Surgical ward is you got a broad horizon of must-learns. I googled for its 411 before I get to be asked by the relatives or the nurse supervisor on duty.
What is nice about our institution is that they have this internet surfing time to allow for the nurses to search on some medical information.
According to Medline Plus, RBC (red blood cell) tagging or an RBC nuclear scan is a group of tests using small amounts of radioactive material to mark (tag) red blood cells (RBCs). The body is then scanned to detect the location and flow of the tagged RBCs.
The RBCs are tagged with radioisotope in 1 of 2 ways.
The first method involves removing blood from a vein. The red blood cells are separated from the rest of the blood sample and then mixed with the radioactive material. The cells with the radioactive material are considered “tagged.” A short time later the tagged RBCs are injected into one of your veins.
The second method involves an injection of medicine that will allow the radioactive material to attach to your red blood cells. The radioactive material is injected into a vein 15 or 20 minutes after you receive this medicine.
Scanning may be done immediately or after a delay. You will lie on a table underneath a special camera that detects the location and amount of radiation given off by the tagged cells.
A series of scans may be performed. The specific areas scanned depend on the reason for the test.
And true to my hunch, the NSOD asked me about the RBC tagging when she rounded our unit.
I hope that this test will determine the source of bleeding.
